Galium verum is a perennial flowering herb in the Rubiaceae family. The native range includes most of temperate Eurasia. The English names of lady’s bedstraw or yellow bedstraw indicate one traditional usage of the plant in medieval Europe: to stuff mattresses. It may have been chosen for this purpose as the scent can act a flea repellent. This particular plant is likely of the asiaticum subspecies compared to the more common verum subspecies.
