The native range of Rhaponticum uniflorum is South Siberia to Korea, primarily in the temperate biome. It is a 20-60 cm tall rhizomatic flowering plant generally found on mountain slopes and riverbanks. It is used in China, Siberia and Mongolia as a stimulant and anti-inflammatory medicine. In Mongolia specifically, the herb is used for general vitality and for anti-inflammatory remedy, but the rots, flowers, and buds are used in other areas of East Asia. In a review of studies of the chemical composition of the roots and herb parts, Olennikov (2022) concludes the confirmed compounds support an anti-inflammatory use.
